Vanilla is a vine that can grow up to 25 meters (82 feet) high. It usually takes around 18 months to produce its first flowers. The small orchid-like vanilla flower blooms for only a few hours before wilting unless it is pollinated by insectsor hand.

History: The Totonacs of Veracruz, Mexico were the first cultivators of the vanilla bean. In the 1400's The Aztecs showed the Spaniards how vanilla could sweeten their food and how to use the oil in purfume.
